BE PART OF A FAIRER STORY

Illustration of Fairtrade farmers carrying a basket of cocoa podsSometimes it seems like the world’s problems are too big for us to solve. When millions of people we rely on to grow our food are facing the disastrous effects of poverty and the climate crisis, it’s difficult to know the right thing to do, for them, and for our planet.

But there are small choices we can make here in the UK, which make a big difference to farmers and workers around the world. Together, through Fairtrade, we can make a difference and be part of a better story.

1. Choose Fairtrade

Only with Fairtrade are you doing the right thing by both people and planet. Behind the FAIRTRADE Mark, farmers and workers get a fairer deal, the environment is protected and women and men are empowered to develop as leaders and entrepreneurs.

When you choose Fairtrade, you are taking a stand against exploitation in the supply chain. So always check for the FAIRTRADE Mark.

2. Join the Fairtrade movement

Illustration of Fairtrade Farmer Edith and her daughterThe average cocoa farmer in West Africa earns well below the extreme poverty line, with farmers estimated to receive less than 7 percent of the value of their cocoa, compared to manufacturers who take a 35 percent share and retailers 44 percent.

Fairtrade is fighting for living incomes for cocoa farmers. A living income means enough money to lead a dignified life, paying for essentials such as clothing, medicine and school. We cannot win this fight alone. We need to work with governments, brands and retailers to make the commitments and policies necessary. Only then can living incomes become a reality for cocoa farmers.
